Boynton Beach, FL (February 2, 2026) – In a new Cultural Responsiveness blog recognizing Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month, Latinos en Optometry and VSP Vision highlight the critical role optometrists play in early detection, patient education, and long-term management of this leading cause of irreversible vision loss.
The blog draws on current prevalence data, outlines practice considerations for optometrists, and highlights evidence showing persistent gaps in awareness and utilization of eye care—particularly among Hispanic/Latino adults.¹
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 20 million U.S. adults aged 40 and older have some form of AMD, including approximately 1.5 million with vision-threatening late-stage disease. Research also suggests that many Hispanic/Latino adults with chronic eye disease remain undiagnosed or unaware, often due to lower utilization of comprehensive eye exams and barriers related to access and communication.¹
“AMD is a condition where early identification and consistent follow-up can make a meaningful difference in preserving vision,” said Glenda Aleman, OD, Board Member of Latinos en Optometry. “As optometrists, we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to ensure patients understand their risk, the importance of ongoing monitoring, and the steps they can take to protect their vision. That includes meeting patients where they are and communicating in ways that support understanding and adherence.”
The blog encourages optometrists to prioritize careful macular evaluation, assess key risk factors, follow evidence-based management guidelines, and reinforce follow-up care through clear, culturally responsive patient communication. By embedding these strategies into everyday practice, clinicians can help slow disease progression and improve long-term outcomes.
